FACTS ABOUT ILULISSAT


Location: Ilulissat is situated on the west coast of Greenland, approximately 220 miles (350 kilometers) north of the Arctic Circle.

Population: Ilulissat has a population of around 4.800 people and is the third largest town in Greenland after Sisimiut and Nuuk (capital). Greenland has a total population of around 57.000 people.

Ilulissat Icefjord: The town is renowned for the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The Icefjord is home to one of the world's most active glaciers, Sermeq Kujalleq, and is characterized by its massive icebergs. Read more about the Ilulissat Icefjord here.

The Disko Bay: Ilulissat overlooks The Disko Bay known for its rich marine life and as a migration route for various whale species, including the charismatic humpback whale. The Disko Bay is also known for calm waters and mild weather during the summer period.

Midnight Sun: During the summer months, Ilulissat experiences the phenomenon of the midnight sun, where the sun does not set from the end May until the end of July due to its location north of the Arctic Circle. Read more about the phenomenon here.

Greenlandic Culture: Ilulissat has a strong Inuit cultural presence. The Inuit people have inhabited this region for thousands of years, and the town reflects a blend of traditional practices and modern influences. Fishing and hunting it still by far the main occupation in the region.

Transportation: While Ilulissat is relatively isolated, it is accessible by air. Ilulissat Airport connects the town to other parts of Greenland and serves as a gateway for international travelers. Air Greenland operates multiple routes to Ilulissat year-round and Icelandair operates a route from Reykjavik (KEF) in the summer. In Ilulissat there's a shuttle bus between the airport and all hotels. Getting around in the city centre can easily be done by walking or using the relatively cheap taxis. 

Climate and weather: Ilulissat has a polar climate, characterized by cold winters and cool summers. Average temperatures in the summer months range from 4 to 10 degrees Celsius (39 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit).
