Whale Watching

Go whale watching with Tarajoq Tours and experience the charismatic giants of the sea from an open boat with a 360°panoramic view. In the summer season, the humpback whale, minke whale and fin whale are the most numerous species. The humpback whale is the acrobat among the great whales, despite its huge size up to 18 metres and 30 tonnes. When it breaches, it can launch its whole body out of the water and strike the surface with its tail and fins. It's easy to recognise by the bump on its back and its long white fins. Our skipper is always updated on the latest whale sightings in the Disco Bay area, so usually it won’t take long for us to spot the first whale!

With Tarajoq Tours you're guaranteed a personal and unique small group experience onboard our nine passenger-boat. Whale watching from a smaller boat allows us to come close to the animals, without unnecessary disturbance of their natural habitat - underlining our pledge to sustainable and responsible tourism.

Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours. Price: 750 DKK per person.

Paakitsoq Icecap Adventure

If you’re up for an epic full-day adventure with a mission to reach the Icecap, keep on reading! On this combined boat and hiking tour we’ll leave Ilulissat at 9 in the morning and sail north towards the astonishing Paakitsoq Fjord. A long the way we’ll pass the small settlement of Oqaatsut before reaching the mouth of the Paakitsoq Fjord, which is well known for humpback whales busy feeding on capelin.

At first, Paakitsoq Fjord appears to be a dead end, but hidden behind a large peninsula there’s a narrow inlet allowing access to an even bigger, almost surreal looking fjord with green-turquoise water colored by silt from the icecap melt water. Approximately 1,5-2 hours after leaving Ilulissat, we’ll reach the bottom of the fjord with no other people in sight.

After anchoring the boat, we’ll have a 4-kilometer hike in front of us, before reaching a viewpoint at 600 meters above sea level. From here we’ll have an unparalleled breathtaking 180-degree view over the Greenland Icecap and a massive jaw-dropping glacier. After some time, we’ll find a good spot to enjoy our lunch. There will be plenty of time for photography and depending on the conditions and the experience of the group, we’ll be able to get very close to the icecap.

Afterwards we’ll hike back to the boat and then sail south arriving in Ilulissat around 5 in the afternoon.

Duration: 8 hours. Price: 1950 DKK per person.

We'll have plenty of time to explore the area, get up close to the waterfall and take the best photos. We'll then hike back to the boat and sail to the small settlement of Oqaatsut.

Before eating a delicious lunch at the local restaurant, we'll do a walk around the settlement and the guide will give an introduction to the history and everyday life of Oqaatsut. After lunch we'll sail back to Ilulissat, hoping to spot whales on the way.

Greenlandic Fishing

Try fishing like the locals do. Fishing is the main occupation of Ilulissat, focused around the delicate halibut. But the area holds much more than halibut. The Disco Bay is known for prestine fish and seafood - and we will try our luck for both cod fish, wolf fish, musselsand sea urchins.

To ensure an authentic experience, we will sail in an openboat. We use different fishing methods such as traditional jig, net and rod. It will vary from day to day, what we may catch and what method we are using. You can keep your catch.

By request, we can arrange to prepare the catch in a traditional Greenlandic style. Enjoy the freshest seafood while sitting on the rocks taking in the spectacular view (additional cost).
